A couple of us Cutliners recently jumped at the chance to hear Sophia Amoruso, Founder and CEO of Nasty Gal, speak at an event put on by The Commonwealth Club. The session, #Girlboss, was moderated by Alison Pincus, Co-Founder of One Kings Lane. The discussion covered Sophia’s latest book, Nasty Galaxy, and gave us the inside scoop on her unconventional approach to style, philosophy and advice for #Girlbosses everywhere.
Sophia and Alison’s discussion was not only hilarious, but provided a ton of interesting insight into the journey of becoming an entrepreneur and pursuing your dreams. Here are some of our big takeaways:
If you’re invited into a big meeting or pitch or conversation, know that you’re there for a reason and have the confidence to share your ideas and thoughts. You wouldn't have been invited unless they thought you had something major to bring to the table.
Look where others aren’t looking. Sophia was talking specifically about fashion here, but it applies to a lot of different scenarios. Be unique and think differently, and that’s where you’ll find the hidden gems.
If you make moves, things happen. If you don’t make moves, things don’t happen. Nothing is going to change and you are never going to learn if you don’t try. So, do something!
Every life experience is valuable. Sophia went from dumpster diving to running a million dollar business, and is now creating a TV show based on her story. Although we may not all have a future TV show based on our lives, it’s the little things that teach us and make us who we are.
