Apps for an Easy Labor Day

Labor Day is weekend kicks off tomorrow and that usually means backyard BBQs, poolside soirees and a well-deserved three-day weekend. But as much fun as a holiday weekend can be, it can get just as stressful. There’s party planning to do, travel itineraries to coordinate and plenty of food and drinks to prepare. For this Labor Day, we’ve come up with a list for you to make your weekend a little bit easier and a lot more fun.

Party planning: You’ve committed to being the party host for the weekend, but that means you have some work to do. The good news is that you don’t have to do it all alone with the help of some handy apps. Wunderlist will help you organize your to-do lists and set tasks reminders, so whether it’s big or small, it’ll get done. If you’re planning a potluck party, check out Punchbowl, where you can create digital invites that include information on how many appetizers, side dishes and entrees are still needed for the event. Guests can choose to bring dishes that are still available, so you avoid having four bowls of coleslaw from your well-meaning guests.

Food & Drink: The right recipes can make or break any Labor Day party. Thanks to Punchbowl, your friends will help with some of the day’s dishes, but you’ll probably still want to provide a few snacks and drinks of your own, and Pepperplate can help. This app has everything from creating menus to managing recipes. You can even make your grocery list in the app. The next step to wowing your friends this Labor Day is refreshments. Mixology is a cocktail reference guide with recipes that will transform you into the bartender you always knew you could be.

Travel: Gasbuddy is useful any time of the year, but especially for a big travel weekend like Labor Day. The app lets you search for the cheapest gas prices by city, state and zip code in the U.S. in Canada and is updated in real time. And because trips aren’t just about the destination, you can enjoy the journey with Roadtrippers, an app that helps you find attractions and natural wonders along your route. You can also search for hotels via the app.

Safety: Labor Day is an end-of-summer celebration with fun at the top of the to-do list, but it’s important to have safety in mind too. Drinking Buddy should be your go-to app to track your drinking habits, so you stay on the fun side of drinking. Also, if you’re planning on being outside for a large part of the day, use Wolfram’s Sun Exposure Reference App for info on the sun conditions in your area and reminders on what time of day you should reapply sunscreen. If you want to take the guessing out of grilling and make sure your burgers and steaks are cooked safely, invest in an iGrill system, a meat thermometer that syncs with your phone, so you know exactly when your food is ready from your device.
