Women’s History Month: Cutliners Who Inspire Us

Every March, we feel inspired when we think about the women who have shaped storytelling throughout history. We remember Ann Franklin, the first female newspaper editor in the U.S. (1762), and Anne McDowell, the first American woman to publish a newspaper — the “Women’s Advocate” — run entirely by women (1855). We reread stories from media giants, like Katharine Graham, who became the first female Fortune CEO while at The Washington Company (1972), and Barbara Walters, who was the first news anchorwoman in the U.S. (1976) before becoming a broadcast legend.

Women are still making history in media and storytelling — breaking barriers, and shattering ceilings. In 2019, Janet Mock became the first openly trans woman to sign an exclusive Netflix deal, and in 2021 Tashnuva Anan Shishir became the first trans news anchor in Bangladesh.

At Cutline, being inspired by brilliant and bold women almost feels like part of the daily gig: drink coffee, scan for news, learn new ideas from talented teammates, collaborate on creative projects, and hop into a three o’clock client meeting.

In honor of Women’s History Month, we want to recognize how our teammates inspire us every day.

Aspiration and ambition

Catherine

Sophia inspires me to do my best work every day. Her intellect drives such meaningful results for our clients, while her sense of humor and dependability create a safe space for the people around her. Thank you, Sophia, for always being trustworthy and keeping it real — I feel lucky to call you a friend and co-Cutliner.

Catherine is a tremendously ambitious, creative, and kindhearted woman. At Cutline, she lets her curiosity guide her to great results by asking thought-provoking questions, kicking off virtual brainstorms, and proactively offering to lead or support new projects. Meanwhile, her interests outside of work, from reading five books simultaneously to baking delicious goods from scratch, inspire me to try new things and grow.

Passion that takes us places

Lilly

Maria's confidence is incredible, and I really admire her. I especially love how she stands her ground and makes a case when she's passionate about something. Her energy adds so much to our team!

Lilly lives at the intersection of major media savvy, fashionista style, and social justice smarts. Truly, she does it all. Full of brilliant inspiration, unafraid to raise her hand, and eager to connect the dots between people and ideas, Lilly either has the answer or knows someone who does. Thank you, Lilly, for being as highly creative as you are downright cool.

Contagious energy

Joey brings such positive energy to our team. She joins every meeting with the biggest smile and is always ready to take on whatever the day has in store for her. She's thoughtful and curious — the two qualities we can never get enough of at Cutline! Joey constantly inspires me to radiate joy because it makes such a difference in my day. Keep shining, Joey!

Krista brings light everywhere she goes! She is always open-heartedly sharing her growth and adventures in the most entertaining way and generously offering words of support and affirmation. I hope she knows how every small, kind gesture brightens up my day, and I'm sure every Cutliner can relate!

Leading by example

Jordan

Esther is the perfect example of an ideal leader. She mentors others with confidence and kindness and encourages everyone to perform to the best of their abilities. Thank you, Esther, for continuing to make Cutline a wonderful place and for being an incredible leader!

Jordan is someone who greatly inspires me, and probably every other Cutliner as well! She devotes 100% to everything she does, from the many thoughtful ideas she brings to the Community & Care Committee to her beautifully smart writing for clients and Cutline. She inspires me by bringing her authentic self to work every day, encouraging others to share, speak, and engage in the things they're passionate about too. Thanks for leading by example, Jordan. You make Cutline a better place.

Mentors among us

Carrie

Shannon inspires me in countless ways, every single day. She's an incredibly supportive and thoughtful mentor, teammate, and friend. I feel so lucky to work with and learn from her in everything we do together, and am beyond grateful for all the laughs, dances, and lunches we've shared in between.

Carrie is an inspiration to me because she challenges me to be the best problem-solver I can be. Whether it’s tackling a client challenge or making a pitch feel more impactful, she encourages me to be patient with my ideas so they can bloom! She is a calm and empathetic leader who I feel lucky to work beside.

Thank you to all the women who have bravely paved the way, shared their stories, and opened doors across industries. It may be Women’s History Month, but you can count on us to celebrate these achievements all year round.
