10 Questions With Joey
There are few things we love more than welcoming team members to the Cutline Crew, and we’re thrilled to introduce Joey — our newest account coordinator!
We sat down with Joey to learn why she’s excited to build a career in PR, how unexpected gifts from her dad have shaped her working style, and to hear about the best piece of advice she took from an epic speaker at her recent NYU commencement. Read on for the full scoop.
What do you love about PR?
I love that this field is so interconnected with my daily life and personal growth. Being in PR has not only helped me understand news and media from a different perspective, but I’ve become more critical of the content I consume. I’m also more appreciative of all the hard work behind each campaign!
I’ve also learned how to translate my personal interests into creative new ideas for clients. For example, I’ve always been a big film nerd. Being in PR has made me more aware of how movies influence cultural and consumer trends. As I continue writing, doing research, and building relationships, I see how these skills help can help me outside of work, too. I’ve already overcome my old fear of writing emails, which has made me much more confident in dealing with customer service and landlords here in New York City!
What’s your go-to productivity trick?
My to-do list is my secret weapon for staying prepared and motivated. Whenever I get a task, I start a Google doc or sheet (even with the most basic structure) and hyperlink that into my personal to-do list so the task doesn’t get lost in a sea of tabs. I also make sure my to-do list is pretty! Spending a few extra minutes choosing a nice font and color scheme may seem unnecessary, but it helps me feel creative, inspired, and organized.
What do you think is the most exciting technological invention to ever happen?
I’m thankful for refrigerators every day! I can’t imagine living without ice cream or leftovers.
Who has influenced you most when it comes to how you approach your work?
Growing up, my dad never bought me a “normal” birthday gift for a teenage girl — instead, I received professional scissors, a Kindle, and the smoothest pen ever (also the heaviest and ugliest). I always assumed the gifts were office supplies he no longer wanted. Years later, I realized he was trying to teach me the importance of investing in a good tool, and more generally, the long-term value of steady preparation. While I was upset about not getting a new toy when I was younger, I’m now grateful for the lesson he shared with me — it influences me every day, especially in my work.
What’s the best advice you were ever given? Who was it from?
Taylor Swift spoke at our commencement at NYU and shared the most hilarious and comforting piece of advice. “No matter how hard you try, you will always look back at your past self and cringe.”
If you could snap your fingers and become an expert in something, what would it be?
I would love to be good at something creative like crocheting or ceramics. I started learning how to crochet during the pandemic and enjoyed making gifts for friends and family. Hopefully, one day I’ll master something other than simple round saucers in a million different colors.
What do you do to turn things around when you’re having a bad day?
I love being in nature, especially when I’m having a rough day. Since I live in the city and can’t walk out my door and be in the woods or mountains, I just put my earphones in and go on a long walk. I usually start without a destination, but somehow always end up at a Trader Joe’s for three hours. There is nothing more calming to me than walking home with a big bag of food.
How do you prefer to end your day?
It depends on the day! After an extremely good or tough day, I journal before bed to record the nice moments or digest negative feelings. Other times I watch a movie, YouTube videos, or Instagram Reels, which helps me unwind. This also ties back to why I love PR and storytelling, as you never know what kind of content will inspire new campaign ideas.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
When I was a kid, I always wanted to teleport so I could wake up right before class started instead of getting up early to walk to school. Now, because of the pandemic, I haven’t seen my family in China for three years. Teleportation would make it possible to easily reunite with them.
…and last, what’s something you saw recently that made you smile?
A dog ran into our office yesterday and it made my day. :)
