Cutline Honors Pride — See Our Art!

This June, the Cutline Crew came together to celebrate and honor Pride all month long. We brunched and learned while watching The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin, a documentary about the beloved San Francisco storyteller. We shared educational and inspirational reads with one another on Slack every day. And we concluded the month by creating personal art pieces that answered one important question: What does Pride mean to you?

“To figure out who you are, accept who you are, be happy with who you are, and shout it out to the world proudly and unapologetically so others can do so too. My art piece is based on the preconceived notion that the color gold represents wealth, superiority, and ultimately ‘perfection’. You win a gold medal at the Olympics, a gold star in elementary school, a gold plaque at work. But in reality, no human being is 100% perfect, yet we are ALL perfectly made to be exactly who we are. My portrait is a woman breaking free from society’s golden perfection illusion, and shouting out how proud she is to be her own perfect color.”Maria

“For me, Pride means freedom, resilience, and expressing yourself unapologetically. The LGBTQ+ community has wrongly faced—and still faces—oppression and hate. For my piece, I wanted to remember a few of the many trailblazers that advocated for LGBTQ+ rights, along with figures that embody pride, being yourself and never letting anyone tell you otherwise. In this piece you'll find (in order from left to right): Harvey Milk, Bayard Rustin, Billie Jean King, Laverne Cox, Freddie Mercury, RuPaul Charles, and Sylvia Rivera.” —Lily

To me, Pride means being proud of who you are, where you come from, and where you’re going. There’s no perfect journey. There’s not just one way to love. And beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, and colors. We’re all extremely unique, and we should always embrace and celebrate uniqueness, in ourselves and others. Be kind. Love deeply. Be authentically you.” —Carrie

“To me, Pride is about celebrating all of us as individuals and honoring our uniqueness. The world would be such a boring place if we were all exactly alike. While much progress has been made, I believe we still have a long way to go in encouraging people to express their true selves with confidence. Love is love, and we are all 100% worthy of feeling it, expressing it, and enjoying how magical it is.” —Krista

“Pride to me means celebrating and supporting the LGBTQ+ community. I have family and friends who identify as LGBTQ+ and they mean the world to me. To me, Pride is a great opportunity to recognize the progress that has been made for LGBTQ+ equality, but also the progress that still needs to be made.” —Esther
